The Type S was a small single-seat fighter built specifically to a United States Navy order of 1922 which called for a shipboard fighter (Class VF). Powered by a 230 hp Gwynne-built BR2 Bentley rotary engine, this monoplane fighter had a circular-section fuselage of monocoque construction. Immediately aft of the cockpit and wing-root fairing was a fuselage break-joint which was probably hinged to ease storage problems in the small aircraft carriers of the period. The cantilever wing had full-span leading edge slats and also full-span drooping ailerons, both being high-lift devices to achieve short take-off runs on the short carrier decks. Armament was to have been two fixed guns mounted in the top of the fuselage forward of the windscreen. Although at least one machine appeared in September 1923, none were delivered, as the US Navy order was cancelled in 1924. Serial numbers A6402-A6404 had been allocated to the three machines ordered. A twin-floatplane version of the Type S was proposed to the US Navy, but this version was not built.
